4×4 (four-wheel drive) chassis: The first number represents the total number of wheels of the vehicle, and the second number represents the number of driving wheels, that is, all four wheels of the vehicle have driving power. It is different from the 4×2 two-wheel drive (only front-wheel/rear-wheel drive) chassis. It is the mainstream chassis architecture for hard-core off-road, special operation vehicles, and some high-end SUVs.

Equipped with a transfer case (core component), which can switch between two-wheel drive/four-wheel drive mode, some with low-speed four-wheel drive; front and rear independent transmission shafts, connecting the gearbox, front differential, and rear differential; optional differential locks (front lock, rear lock, central differential lock, commonly known as three locks), lock the differential when one side of the wheel slips, and transfer power to the wheel with adhesion.
